Three years after their first album "Vergessene Pfade," Neun Welten again elicit their natural folk sounds out of the dark depths of the forests and into the light of the music world. It now becomes clear that the mythologically named band's decision to take their time to work on "Destrunken" — the successor to their highly acclaimed debut — was more than right. With "Destrunken" — an imaginary word solely designed to inspire multiple associations and emotions —, these nature mystics offer a sophomore of impressive coherence and characteristic compositions, delighting and enchanting their listeners once more with mystical and melancholic folk odes.

With its elegiac chords, 'Frosthauch' introduces the new album, which by virtue of its emotional depth could manage to bridge the gap left by Empyrium. Like this project that unfortunately called it a day, Neun Welten base their compositions on primordial folk roots, but complete their melancholic, crepuscular song material with numerous details, ideas, and unexpected turns, thus weaving an atmospheric density that simply renders it impossible to not take notice. A prime example for that is the two-part title track many will know from their tours with Tenhi and Dornenreich: 'Destrunken I & II' offer a dramatic build-up and oppressive intensity you rarely find in other folk bands.

"Destrunken" is topped of by a masterful artwork courtesy of Fursy Teyssier (Alcest, Les Discrets, Amesoeurs), designed on the basis of the music to perfectly complement the album's various moods on the visual level.

Empyrium may have left a legacy that's hard to match, yet "Destrunken" proves that their loss is not irretrievable, despite the sheer genius of the creators of Empyrium — this album is a sophomore somewhere between folk, classical music, and wonderful settings of nature, raising a worthy monument to the world beyond the cities. Tony Wakeford is an artist who needs no real further introduction. When simply evoking his involvement in legendary bands like Death In June, Current 93, Nurse With Wound and of course his very own brainchild Sol Invictus this musician simply deserves his rank of cult musician from the neo-folk and industrial scene. Tony Wakeford has also released several albums under his own name and with this "Not All Of Me Will Die". This new opus commemorates the life and work of the Polish-Ukrainian Jewish poetess Zuzanna Ginczanka, who was executed by the Gestapo in Kraków in 1944. The lyrics have been taken from the work of Ginczanka adding a very sensitive touch to the work of Wakeford. Musical wise Tony Wakeford moves in between soundtrack compositions and his beloved neo-folk influences. The music and the spoken vocals by Susan Matthews give an extra visual strength to the entity. It's very poignant while the use of several classical instruments like violin, flute or yet clarinet reinforces the sensibility of the songs. Tony Wakeford invited a huge number of contributors to his work like members of Orchestra Noir, Zunroyz andSol Invictus . "Not All Of Me Will Die" is one more accomplishment in the long career of Wakeford who always finds new inspiration and more and more sensibility in his releases! This fairytale started to unravel four years ago with the release of
Triarii's "Piece Heroique" (ES-05). A sinister seed was planted in
the fertile soil of northern Europe as Christian Erdmann (Triarii)
and Tomas Pettersson (Ordo Rosarius Equilibrio) gave birth to the
track "Roses 4 Rome".
And now finally, the progeny has been conceived and fully developed;
and what they call TriORE, has ultimately been born.
Both participants go beyond themselves and step out of normal
character, but TriORE is nonetheless the embodiment of all that which
is Triarii, and all that which is Ordo Rosarius Equilibrio; like a
succulent apple in two opposite pieces just waiting to be devoured.
The bombastic touch of Triarii is still there; the string sections,
the choirs, the martial drums and much more; alongside the eloquence
of Ordo Rosarius Equilibrio, musically, melodically, as well as
lyrically.
This is what all lovers of both bands have been waiting for, a
complete forty minutes of Art Deco Industrial Pop.
This work begins where Roses 4 Rose left us, and takes all the way
from the rising of victory, through the trenches and all the way till
Europa falls.

Leyland Kirby broke cover back in the mid-90s as the sinister music intelligence behind V/VM, an anarchic music project-cum-production house that specialised in feeding kitsch pop hits – Chris De Burgh’s Lady in Red, Robbie Williams’ Angels, and so on – though a grisly sonic mincer. The results came out sounding like the karaoke booth of your worst nightmares, humorous and nauseous in equal measure, but you had to admire Kirby’s dedication to the cause: he certainly knew how to turn your stomach and put a smile on your face at the same time.

Kirby’s debut album under his own name comes after a spell recording as The Caretaker, which with the benefit of hindsight, feels a little like a bridge between where he was then and where he is now. Inspired by Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining, The Caretaker’s early music was built from antique ballroom dance 78s, often heavily treated, pitched to alien speeds and fighting through ghostly curtains of reverb. And indeed, Sadly, the Future Is No Longer What It Was (a trilogy, available as digital download, triple CD or, for the moneybags, six platters of vinyl) shares something of The Caretaker’s drifting, ethereal feel, existing in a sort of liminal, dream-like realm where time passes slowly and signposts melt into the fog.

But this collection feels like a step on from The Caretaker, as well. Colours are sharper, the emotional content is broader, and often the fog falls away to reveal the surprising fact that Kirby happens to be a pianist of some note. On When We Parted, My Heart Wanted to Die (Friedrichshain Memory), elegiac piano and synthesised strings rise gently over a sea of vacuum hums and static crackle, and while there’s clearly no finger hovering over the edit button – the track billows out to 15 minutes in length – there’s little feel of stasis or torpor.

It’s ambient music, yes – but Sadly, the Future Is No Longer What It Was boasts an emotional, melancholic undertow so accomplished it shames many other examples of the form. - BBC Music

Highly detailed arrangements use the sound of the flamenco guitar as well as mysterious samples, pulsating beats and sad melodies. In ROME’s songs there lives a stoic sense of the melodramatic. As well as Cohen, one must look to icons such as Tom Waits and late Johnny Cash in order to be able to describe the lyrics and voice of Jerome Reuter.
"Flowers from Exile" is just as much an emotional as a critical work. The personally stamped album of a modern singer-songwriter which tells of journeys both within and without. Jerome Reuter’s moving vocals and Patrick Damiani’s complex musical arrangements leave the musical roots of folk far behind and send these "Flowers from Exile" to all listeners who are willing and capable of feeling the dignity, the hope and the pride behind the lyrics and who are prepared to recognise themselves in those restless spirits whom the twelve part song cycle conjures up. Miasmah presents the debut album from Elegi (real name: Tommy Jansen).
Jansen spends his time wreck-diving - a pursuit which involves deep-sea diving into shipwrecks, exploring the forgotten graveyards of another time. The album's title 'Sistereis' even refers to this pursuit; it is the word for a ship's final voyage before it sinks and this haunted, waterlogged theme is transferred beautifully into the music itself. I'm sure you've all dunked your head under water when swimming before, and listened to the sounds of the surrounding area as they filter through liters and liters of chlorinated liquid; this muffled, bubbling mystery is apparent throughout 'Sistereis', the whole album coming across like a radio transmission from beneath the sea. In fact, the album could easily be the follow-up to Svarte Greiner's absolutely epic 'Knive', an album which set the bar for the steadily growing 'acoustic doom' movement, and where 'Knive' was akin to a murderous venture into the dark woods, 'Sistereis' is a similarly bloody sub-aquatic voyage. It could be almost puerile to mention the words 'cinematic' or name-drop Angelo Badalamenti yet again, but it's never been more appropriate; Tommy Jansen creates a damp and half-seen world of his own with tempered electronics, decaying accordion sounds, deep resonating cellos and layer upon layer of collected field recordings (many taken from his deep sea explorations). It's almost like listening to the ancient ghosts of Viking long-boats, lost Victorian cruise-liners or swarthy Pirate ships, replete with rattling chains and creaking bows, yet this isn't a purely dark and depressing experience, there are glimmers of light and hope between the scratches and scrapes, a sense that this is a record which reveres history rather than being frightened of it. 'Sistereis' is another crucial part of the steadily expanding Miasmah catalogue, and proof that the label is quickly becoming one of the most essential on the planet - prepare yourself for a foggy trip into mysterious climes, it's one you won't regret taking, even if you never return! Essential purchase.

About the Book:

In 1877, two gentlemen, Messrs Tonnison and Berreggnog, head into Ireland to spend a week fishing in the village of Kraighten. While there, they discover in the ruins of a very curious house a diary of the man who had once owned it. Its torn pages seem to hint at an evil beyond anything that existed on this side of the curtains of impossibility. This is a classic novel that worked to slowly bridge the gap between the British fantastic and supernatural authors of the later 19th century and modern horror fiction. Classic American horror writer H. P. Lovecraft lists this and other works by Hodgson among his greatest influences.

About The Album:

This musical adaptation of The House On The Borderland is the result of a collaboration between German musicians Rüdiger Gleisberg and Mathias Grassow, the founding duo behind Nostalgia, and Italian Luigi Seviroli, who suggested the concept to Gleisberg and Grassow. Track titles closely follow William Hope Hodgson’s original narrative, which concerns two friends on a fishing holiday in Ireland who discover a manuscript in a ruined house. The manuscript tells of its author’s encounters in the house with evil supernatural and extra-dimensional beings, culminating in the cosmic horror of helplessly watching throughout countless aeons as the earth and its solar system are consumed by the ‘Dark Sun’.

This is the re-release (limited to 500) of the second Apoptose album originaly released in, 2002 nearly two years after the release of the CD "Nordland," this time treading on unexpected musical paths. Only occasionally does one still feel a faint breeze from the barren landscapes of the north, for on "Blutopfer" a special ritual of the south is celebrated: the Easter drumming processions of the little Spanish village of Calanda. Following a stay in Calanda in 1998, Apoptose could not forget the impression this festival made, since the primordial power of these archaic rhythms and the magic of the blood that flows from the hands of the drummers touches anyone who has ever witnessed it. The decision was made then to compile an album from the hours of documentary recordings which came into being during this time. However, it was not until the year 2001 that the time was finally right to start the project that in 2002 reached its final form in the CD "Blutopfer." The title is the German term for "blood sacrifice".
Contains drum samplings from the 1998 annual Semana Santa holy festival in Calanda village, Spain.

The music is sort of a mixture of neo-folk and medieval styles, completed with powerful drumming and use of electronics. Hekate consists of many members and a rich instrumentarium and with several vocalists (male and female), so that the songs are pretty varied. Sometimes it sounds bombastic, with martial drums and trumpets, sometimes fragile and beautiful with female voices and acoustic guitars and strings. Most lyrics are in German, but there are also texts in French, Yiddish and old German. My favourite track is "Du mein einzig", and was my first approach to the sound of Hekate, that was in V.A. Miroque Vol. VI, that i buy some years ago.
