Tony Wakeford - Not All of Me Will Die [2009]

1 Non Omnias Moriar
2 2
3 Fullness of August
4 4
5 5
6 6

Tony Wakeford is an artist who needs no real further introduction. When simply evoking his involvement in legendary bands like Death In June, Current 93, Nurse With Wound and of course his very own brainchild Sol Invictus this musician simply deserves his rank of cult musician from the neo-folk and industrial scene. Tony Wakeford has also released several albums under his own name and with this "Not All Of Me Will Die". This new opus commemorates the life and work of the Polish-Ukrainian Jewish poetess Zuzanna Ginczanka, who was executed by the Gestapo in Kraków in 1944. The lyrics have been taken from the work of Ginczanka adding a very sensitive touch to the work of Wakeford. Musical wise Tony Wakeford moves in between soundtrack compositions and his beloved neo-folk influences. The music and the spoken vocals by Susan Matthews give an extra visual strength to the entity. It's very poignant while the use of several classical instruments like violin, flute or yet clarinet reinforces the sensibility of the songs. Tony Wakeford invited a huge number of contributors to his work like members of Orchestra Noir, Zunroyz andSol Invictus . "Not All Of Me Will Die" is one more accomplishment in the long career of Wakeford who always finds new inspiration and more and more sensibility in his releases! The fans of the musician will be satisfied! - Sideline

Zelienople - Give It Up [2009]

1 Aging
2 Can't Stop
3 All I Want Is Calm
4 Water Saw
5 I Can Put All My Faith in Her
6 Little Lady Eyefull
7 Dust Bowl
8 All Planed

This unbelievable album from Chicago's Zelienople evokes the spirit of some of the most treasured music we've come to know over the years, fusing in elements of Talk Talk at their most washed-out, early Bark Psychosis, and the narcotic sweeps of Slowdive fused in with the smoky menace of Bohren & Der Club of Gore, Angelo Badalamenti, and the darkest nightscapes of David Lynch. Album opener "Aging" shrouds a veil of mystery over dusted instrumentation that's somehow both evocative of vast abandoned landscapes and the most intangible and detailed abstractions brought on by incurable insomnia. It's that 'epic' evocation of intimacy that's so distinctive about the whole album, utilising that same sumptuous, slowly-evolving methodology that defined the seminal 'Scum' EP Bark Psychosis released almost 20 years ago. 'Can't Stop' introduces skittering percussion and even hazier arrangements, building from a quietly menacing drone to an almost hallucinatory tapestry of sounds, but it's "I Can Put All My Faith in Her" that crafts the formula to its most affecting, narrowing itself to a focused acoustic arrangement that's more conventionally song-like, with all those enveloping signatures cleverly and gradually submerging you deeper into its murky waters. There's something unspeakably magical about the way this band somehow alchemise familiar components into this deep, almost haunting mass of sound, making for an album that's virtually impossible to categorise but which will no doubt end up taking up one of those hallowed spots in your collection reserved for the most special, moving records you feel the rest of the world just couldn't possibly understand. Immense. - Boomkat

Thomas Köner - La Barca [2009]

1 35° 40' N 139° 42' E Hour One
2 43° 42' N 7° 16' E Hour Two
3 45° 26' N 12° 20' E Hour Three

5 41° 53' N 12° 29' E Hour Five
6 33° 31' N 36° 19' E Hour Six

11 42° 7' N 19° 6' E Hour Eleven
12 41° 24' N 2° 10' E Hour Twelve

"In a barque she sails across the high lands of the past.
The barque heads shimmer and glow at stern and bow,
and that lights her unseeable passage.
She calls to the spirits of this hour, and that is how we come to even hear her voice."

There are few artists in the world of recorded music who have such an innate understanding of the use of silence and atmosphere as Thomas Köner. Next to Helge Sten, The Hafler Trio or Mika Vainio, Köner is an acclaimed master of ultra-subtle ambient acoustics, providing some of the finest records on labels like Mille Plateaux, Die Stadt and Chain Reaction, both under his birth name, and as half of seminal techno act Porter Ricks. Like a friendly apparition emerging from the ether, his latest album - the first in nearly five years - has just dropped into our world, with little prior warning, to completely remove us from our day and place us within an environment coloured with moving air, tones of sublime melancholy and indistinct aural landscapes. The tracks are titled by a set of coordinates, which we're sure the more intrigued folks out there will be researching on Google maps, but those looking to leave the mystery intact can attempt to imagine the locations through their associated voices, languages and surrounding aura. For example, without checking, on '48º 52' N 2º 21' E' you could be standing in a train station in Azerbaijan, wrapped up in an intangible moment of cinematic bliss, while on '31º 46' N 19º 6' E' one feels like a ghost in the midst of a Central American pueblo, or somewhere completely unknown. This is music ripe for the imagination, from an unrivaled mind dedicated to enhanced auditory experience and deserves undivided attention from anyone unafraid to let themselves be taken by it. - Boomkat

2 Ice Shifting
3 Frost
4 Partial Melt
5 Lost Land Part 2
6 Drifting
7 Arcane Angelicum
8 Untitled (Dedicated To Z. Beksinski)
9 After The Silence

”Arctic ambience, melting with imagination, leads the listener to the frozen tundra at the top of the world. This rarely explored land, resonant with a shimmering radiance that is bleak, barren and mysterious, is distinguished by slivers of fantastical nuances that twinkle like crystals under the midnight sun.”

The above quotation was taken from a review of the original CD release of Drifting in Motion (2000 on Crowd Control Activities). Now, 8 years later it is time for an enhanced re-release for even more refined sound and experience of Drifting in Motion. The entire album has been carefully re-mixed in 2007 and has been spiced with 3 more nuances.

Peter Andersson is a multi-talented man most famous for his RAISON D'ETRE project on the label Cold Meat Industry label but he is also are responisble for music projects like Stratvm Terror, Bocksholm, Atomine Elektrine, Panzar and many more.

For this new release, two artists, Maria Gullqvist (Sweden) and Eva Verholen (Holland) has been asked to contribute with their own impressions of experiencing Drifting in Motion. Their amazing works are presented on the completely new designed CD artwork in a six panels digipak.

3.4 Days in the Wilderness
3.5 Stralauer Peninsula
3.6 We All Won That Day, Sunshine
3.7 And at Dawn Armed with Glowing Patience, We Will Enter the Cities of Glory

Leyland Kirby broke cover back in the mid-90s as the sinister music intelligence behind V/VM, an anarchic music project-cum-production house that specialised in feeding kitsch pop hits – Chris De Burgh’s Lady in Red, Robbie Williams’ Angels, and so on – though a grisly sonic mincer. The results came out sounding like the karaoke booth of your worst nightmares, humorous and nauseous in equal measure, but you had to admire Kirby’s dedication to the cause: he certainly knew how to turn your stomach and put a smile on your face at the same time.

Kirby’s debut album under his own name comes after a spell recording as The Caretaker, which with the benefit of hindsight, feels a little like a bridge between where he was then and where he is now. Inspired by Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining, The Caretaker’s early music was built from antique ballroom dance 78s, often heavily treated, pitched to alien speeds and fighting through ghostly curtains of reverb. And indeed, Sadly, the Future Is No Longer What It Was (a trilogy, available as digital download, triple CD or, for the moneybags, six platters of vinyl) shares something of The Caretaker’s drifting, ethereal feel, existing in a sort of liminal, dream-like realm where time passes slowly and signposts melt into the fog.

But this collection feels like a step on from The Caretaker, as well. Colours are sharper, the emotional content is broader, and often the fog falls away to reveal the surprising fact that Kirby happens to be a pianist of some note. On When We Parted, My Heart Wanted to Die (Friedrichshain Memory), elegiac piano and synthesised strings rise gently over a sea of vacuum hums and static crackle, and while there’s clearly no finger hovering over the edit button – the track billows out to 15 minutes in length – there’s little feel of stasis or torpor.

It’s ambient music, yes – but Sadly, the Future Is No Longer What It Was boasts an emotional, melancholic undertow so accomplished it shames many other examples of the form. - BBC Music

Celer - Discourses of The Withered [2008]

1.This Thinking Globe Exploding (14:19)
2.The Carved God Is Gone; Waking Above The Pileus Clouds(12:51)
3.Stargazing Lily Lacks The Flower (10:55)
4.A Crush, A Hero-Worship & Hyperrealism (5:51)
5.The Separation Of The Two-Phased Apple Blossoms (8:50)
6.Delaying The Entropy; In Emptiness, Forms Are Born (14:26)

Celer is a husband (Will) and wife (Danielle) duo from California that use a variety of strings as the basis for their sound. Cello, viola, violin and the sounds are mixed in with field recordings, choir. live theremin and then tape spliced and re-assembled in varying lengths to create a loop base. Those sounds are then sampled, layered and processed. The result is a shimmering orchestra. Periods of silence between the notes only enhance the sound. Though at times very haunting, it's brightly hazy ambient. Initially "Discourses..." was to be 1 full-length CD with a bonus CDR ("The Everything and the Nothing") to accompany the first 100 copies. When Celer presented the bonus material, with field recordings mixed in obtained by Danielle over several months in India, the quality of the material was so high that it was suggested and agreed to instead be a concurrent release of two full-length discs. Edition of 500.

This mysterious and onirical album full of rich musical textures somewhere between troubadoresque, militaristic and medieval music that reflects romantic and folk influences tinted by psychedelia and is essentially built around the piano, strings (guitars, violin) and wind instruments such as recorders, oboes and trumpets with the superb voice of Gaë Bolg, which illuminates marvellously the beautiful compositions of this album. The listener is invited to explore the different secret nooks and crannies of this enchanting garden dreamt by Fand...

In the Woods... - Heart of the Ages (1995)

A classic of the black metal genre, with ambient and doom influences. Mandatory for anyone interested in the genesis of the post-black metal subgenre.

Underjordiska & Spectral Lore (Split album, 2008)

"Two experimental black metal one-man bands venturing into new and undiscovered territories: this split is a collaboration far different from your typical "let's throw some left-outs from our previous records, make a intro or two and off to the printing plant" mentality, instead being a concept split album which should be heard as one, rather than two albums on the same cd. It is a journey from the surface of the sea to the very depths of the ocean, and then back towards the surface again. Each musician undertakes one part of the journey; two compositions over 30 minutes, featuring actual underwater recordings, aquatic drones, unique instruments (from a mandolin to a duduk) and even melodic post rockish moments. There is a continual flow of movement to the music, as the listener, embodied within this audial environment, descents and ascends through the ocean, towards a deepest point that seems to bear a particular significance: but is it the goal, or the journey itself that matters more?" - Label

Label: Stellar Auditorium

Tracklist:

All Sides - Dedalus [2007]

1 The Idea (5:33)
2 They Come By Night (4:01)
3 Luv (3:39)
4 Dedalus (6:59)
5 The Unfinished End Of H.W. (5:26)
6 Mistake (2:53)
7 Against The Sun (5:07)
8 Runaway (5:54)
9 Icarus (4:08)
10 Into The Sea (4:48)
11 Stay (5:15)

All Sides pull a Two Gallants on this latest album, going for that smarter-than-thou James Joyce reference (the album draws its name from the Stephen Dedalus character of Ulysses). Although they might belong to the same book club, musically All Sides (aka Bremen's Nina Kernicke) could hardly be further removed from the Texan troubadours: this album is a distinctly dystopic application of technology and post-industrial electronics. Heck, album opener 'The Idea' sounds a bit like the theme music from The Terminator, while more beat-driven pieces like 'They Come By Night' and 'Icarus' sound like they might have been penned to soundtrack an episode of Spooks. Kernicke's production work is at its best on tracks like 'Luv' and 'Mistake', however, when it takes on a creepy ambience of Lustmord proportions. Lovely. ~ Boomkat

Nest - Trail of the Unwary (2007)

A modern classic of ambient/neofolk. Mandatory.

"A hidden pool amidst the woods where the otters come to play, an owl's faint call echoing through the woods, sparkling waterfalls and vast snowcovered landscapes where the reindeer folk and wolves hold their domain. These are only some of the things with the atmosphere Nest strives to capture.
As you can see, nature - our wondrous Godgiven playground, fantasy and more precisely fables are the fluid that courses through Nest's veins. Old folk and animal tales as well as the works of Brothers Grimm and Tolkien, to name a few, have been the roots of great inspiration. " - Nest

Project Arctic - Third Pole [2004]

1 Solar Refraction (9:37)
2 Blinded By White (10:18)
3 The 88th Parallel (7:54)
4 Inner Dark Companion (8:16)
5 The Rim Of The World (7:40)
6 Third Pole (6:55)

The members of This Morn' Omina and Empusae join forces in Project Arctic, a dark glacial and occult sonic entity that casts its spell over the plains from the rim of the world. They form the inner dark companion on an auditory journey to the third pole, from blinding aural snow to an everlasting darkness crushing through the ice of the 88th parallel. They move in a giant soundscape where long stretched strings of coldness explore the unknown icy fields, and where frost bites the air in wide cathedrals of sound. Comes in an exquisitely designed oversized nautilus pack.
